A veteran Seattle police officer has been placed on leave after he was arrested by Tacoma police late Sunday for an alleged domestic violence assault on his girlfriend.
Seattle police said the incident is being investigated internally as well as by Tacoma police. The officer, a 20-year-veteran of the force who was assigned to Patrol Operations Bureau, surrendered his badge and department-issued firearm as required by Seattle police policy, Seattle police said.
Tacoma police said the arrest arose from a complaint of a vandalized vehicle in the 5200 block of Ridge Drive Northeast in Tacoma around 3 p.m. Sunday. Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said someone had scratched a woman's car and thrown gravel on the hood.
When Tacoma police contacted the vehicle's owner, officers noted that she had "obvious injuries to her face." Tacoma police said the woman told them the injuries had been inflicted by her boyfriend during an argument that morning.
Tacoma police said they contacted the Seattle Police Department, who in turn contacted the suspect and ordered him to report to Seattle police headquarters.
When he arrived he was arrested by Tacoma police and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of domestic violence assault.
Police said the officer, who has not been named, posted bond and was released this morning. The officer is expected to be charged in connection with the domestic violence assault on Tuesday, Tacoma police said. Fulghum said the officer is not likely to be charged in connection with the vandalism although police believe the car damage is related to the assault.
