A Dallas police officer faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he drove away from a Hutchins trailer park Friday afternoon as his estranged wife clung to the side of his truck.
Senior Cpl. Randell Evans, a 10-year veteran, told Hutchins authorities that he would turn himself in.
Cpl. Evans had gone to his wife's home to bring her some diapers and milk when they got into an argument, said his wife, Laura Evans. He grabbed their two daughters, ages 3 and 4, and fled with them in the truck, police said.
Mrs. Evans said she ran after the truck and grabbed onto an open window.
"I was hanging on the window as he drove across the lawn, back down the driveway, down the street, turned around, came back down the street, slammed on the brakes, and I fell off by the driveway," she said.
Mrs. Evans injured her arm, police said.
"They were crying and screaming," Mrs. Evans said of the children. "My 4-year-old was begging her father to please stop the car."
Hutchins Detective Emily Owens said Cpl. Evans had a right to take the children. "He had not done anything wrong until he threw her off that truck," she said.
Detective Owens said that she spoke by cellphone with Cpl. Evans and that he told her the children were fine and were sleeping in the truck next to him, but she said she could hear children screaming in the background.
Mrs. Evans said her husband hadn't been violent before.
Dallas County records show that the couple married in June 2002. In April 2006, Mrs. Evans filed for divorce. However, records show that the court dismissed the lawsuit after seven months for reasons that are unclear.
On Jan. 19, Mrs. Evans again filed for divorce.
Cpl. Evans was disciplined seven times between 1998 and 2002 for being late and for missing court. He also was suspended for one day in October 2000 for taking improper action.
