January 23, 2007 By Josh Brogadir A driver suspected in a drunk driving crash in Scranton is a police officer in Lackawanna County. Scranton police say the driver of a sport utility vehicle crashed into a car early Tuesday morning, pushing it over the curb onto the lawn. It ended up hitting a house at the corner of Leggett Street and Rockwell Avenue. Investigators say the driver of the SUV was Kent Mackaliunas, 23, a part-time Blakely police officer. Scranton police gave him a field sobriety test on the scene. He was later taken into custody and charged with DUI, aggravated assault by a vehicle while driving under the influence, reckless driving, and going through a stop sign. The driver of the car, Arlene Sembrot, 59, of Scranton, had to be cut from her vehicle. She was delivering newspapers for the Scranton Times-Tribune. Newspaper officials say she is recovering in the hospital. Blakely's police chief describes Mackaliunas as a hard-working officer and says he has nothing but praise for him professionally, adding that he is shocked and saddened to hear what happened. Mackaliunas has worked at the department for about a year-and-a-half as a part-time employee. The chief says he was taken off the work schedule effective immediately. Bond was set at $25,000. Mackaliunas was taken to the Lackawanna County jail Tuesday afternoon. www.wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=5979560&nav=5ka4
