06.15.2006 - A Richmond Police officer is charged with drunk driving after investigators tell 8News he crashed a police cruiser in Chesterfield County.
19 year Richmond Police veteran Mark Dunn waits on paid leave while fellow officers investigate what they say is a drunk driving accident.
"He was operating a city vehicle. He was operating a Richmond Police Department detective unit at the time. He was not on duty at the time," says Captain Lewis James of the Richmond Police Department
According to police, on June 9th, Detective Dunn ended his shift around 3am. A few hours later, they tell us he crashed his police car at the start of rush hour in Chesterfield County. According to court records, this is Dunn's first DUI offense.
Police tell us Detective Dunn was arrested at the intersection of Huguenot Road and Midlothian Turnpike. They say his unmarked police car hit a vehicle that was stopped at the light. Both vehicles were damaged, but we're told no one got hurt.
Chief Rodney Monroe tells us his officers are not above the law. We're told the department is looking to see why Detective Dunn was driving a police vehicle off duty outside city limits. Captain Lewis James says there is no set policy that covers this kind of case. Over the next several months, Richmond will monitor Dunn's criminal prosecution, making a final decision after the verdict.
"We will complete the internal investigation and provide that to the Chief and we'll just have to trust the Chief to use his experience and judgement and do the appropriate thing," states Captain James.
