06.07.2006 - ORLANDO, Fla. -- An Orange County Sheriff's deputy is facing drunken driving and possibly prostitution-related charges in Orlando.
Deputy James Freeman, 34, is suspended without pay while the investigation is ongoing, WESH 2 News reported.
He was arrested early Tuesday morning along Carter Street when officers went to check out suspicious activity. Two Orlando police officers were sent to the home at about 4 a.m. because of reports of "unknown trouble."
When they arrived at the home, they didn't find any trouble, but they found a tan sport utility vehicle. They could tell that somebody was inside because the brake light kept popping on and off, officials said.
They approached the SUV and allegedly found Freeman inside with a known prostitute. They also said they believed he was drunk because they could smell alcohol on his breath.
Freeman refused to take a field sobriety test. They tried to have him take a Breathalyzer test, but right before they conducted it, he collapsed. They had him checked out at the hospital. After doctors cleared him, the officers took him to jail.
"It puts us, as another law enforcement agency, in a difficult position, but we have to remind ourselves that we are not above the law and everybody is accountable for their own actions," said Sgt. Barbara Jones, of the Orlando Police Department. "Certainly he needs to be treated fairly in this process and allow the judicial system to decide and a jury of his peers to decide whether he was right or wrong."
Freeman joined the force in September 2001 and he was assigned to road patrol.

06.09.2006 -An official voice of the Orange County Sheriff's Office is waiting to hear whether he will face charges of picking up a hooker.
Deputy James L. Freeman Jr. returned to work Wednesday, assigned to answer phone calls from residents seeking assistance in one sheriff's region, records show.
A day earlier, the agency announced Freeman, 34, had been suspended without pay after his drinking-and-driving arrest early Tuesday by Orlando police.
The deputy's quick return to his $38,000-a-year job caught one of Sheriff Kevin Beary's top spokesmen by surprise Thursday.
Initially unaware of the agency's apparent reversal, Capt. Mark Strobridge subsequently said no policy prevents deputies charged with misdemeanor crimes from earning their salaries by working at non-law-enforcement duties.
The possibility that Freeman could be arrested on a charge of assignation to commit prostitution stems from his earlier arrest.
When questioned early Tuesday in his personal vehicle parked on Carter Street, police said Freeman was accompanied by a prostitute.
On Thursday, Orlando police spokeswoman Sgt. Barbara Jones said the department has recommended to the Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office that Freeman be charged with offering to pay the woman for sex.
The recommendation is based on a 17-paragraph written statement by the prostitute that includes price negotiations for sexual acts, Jones said. The name of the woman has not been released by police.
Police said that Freeman, when arrested Tuesday, refused an alcohol-breath test. That will result within 10 days in the automatic suspension of Freeman's license to drive a motor vehicle for 12 months, according to state law.
While Freeman has returned to the public payroll, he has been stripped of his badge, gun, uniform and authority to enforce the law until the charges against him are resolved, records show.
