Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy was booked with drug charges and corruption Friday, but authorities have been mum about the details surrounding her arrest.
Deputy Ruby Roth, 41, of 1408 Thomas St., Gretna, was arrested at her home and booked with three counts of possession of a Schedule Two controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, malfeasance in office and 35 counts of obtaining drugs with a false prescription. All of the charges are felonies, and it is unclear what type of narcotics allegedly were involved.
Roth was released from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on Friday because of prison crowding, according to court records.
Sheriff Harry Lee said he would not discuss details of the case until today. An incident report about the arrest was not available at the records division of the Sheriff's Office.
Roth previously worked for the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office and the Causeway Police Department before joining the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Officials from both of those departments said she resigned voluntarily, and reported no previous problems.
It was unclear Monday when she started at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and what district she was working in.
In 1997 while working for Plaquemines Parish, Roth fractured two vertebrae in her lower back after she wrecked her patrol car while swerving to avoid a dog in the road. She eventually returned to work and did not leave the department until 1999.
The last time a Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy was booked with drug distribution was in 2004 when two deputies were booked with distributing hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is the generic version of the painkiller Vicodin.
Richard Wong, 51, and Floyd Carver, 41, both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute a prescription drug and were fired. Wong also pleaded guilty to public payroll fraud. Wong received two years probation in 2005 and Carver received one year probation. The Sheriff's Office refused to release any information at the time of that incident.
