01/23/07 By CHRISTIAN BOTTORFF Metro undercover police officer Charles R. Williams III was cleared today of charges that he and another officer used their police powers to steal three kilos of cocaine at gunpoint while on duty. But a federal jury found Williams guilty of failing to report that the other officer was involved in an April 2003 cocaine theft. Williams’ conviction is a felony, and can carry up to three years in federal prison. His attorney said he is hoping for probation. Sentencing is scheduled for April 9, his attorney said. Williams’ arrest raises doubts that he will be able to work again as a police officer. Convicted felons aren’t allowed to own firearms in the United States. He is currently on desk duty. The other officer who is accused in the case, Ernest Cecil, is a 15-year veteran of the Metro Police Department.Cecil is awaiting trial on charges of trafficking in cocaine and faking a drug bust. Cecil denied that he did anything wrong in an interview with The Tennessean, and said he was set up. www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070123/NEWS03/70123047/1001/NEWS
