Last week, my son's car (loaned to him by my mother) was stolen from a convenience store in Northeast Louisiana. My son left the keys in the car and went to pre-pay for his gas. When he got to the door, he heard a noise and turned around in time to see the car pull out and head toward the interstate (I-20). Instead of running into the store and calling the cops, he ran the short distance to his friend's house and called his grandmother, who actually owns the car. BIG MISTAKE. He then called the police, who sent out an investigator. The investigator accused my son (who has no history of drug arrests) of trading the car to settle a drug debt. The cops now say that my son waited an hour to call them--that's a lie. Witnesses at his friend's house tell how my son came running up hard, tears streaming down his face, almost hysterical about the incident. The police report, on the other hand, has my son gone for one hour, then strolling up calmly to call for help. The cops say my son couldn't have seen the car go to the interstate; you most definitely can see the interstate as the store is right there. That's only one part of the problem.
The investigators keep calling my mother, an elderly widow, with "rumors" that my son has been seen driving the stolen car since the incident. What kind of fool would declare a car stolen, hide it, then drive it around town to tempt the cops? It makes no sense. THE DAMNED CAR WAS STOLEN. MY SON DOESN'T HAVE IT. My mother called the investigator to check if he'd found anything and was told that the man was on break and wouldn't be back until Sunday morning at 7:30 am. The secretary on the phone made sure my mom understood that no one else could help her, "you'll just have to call back Sunday for Mr. Horse's Ass (not his real name)." Well, she called him Sunday and he had the nerve to ask her, in a snotty voice, "have you found your car, yet?" She said she thought that was HIS job. He replied, "you must not be too worried, you haven't called here in three or four days." He also said that if my son would admit to what REALLY happened to the car, he would help us find it. The same man went to my son's house that day. My daughter-in-law was home, but my son was next door. "Mr. Personality" insisted on remaining alone at the house while she went next door to fetch her husband (she didn't know any better). Who knows what that Gestapo agent looked through until they got back. When my son arrived, the policeman read him his rights and questioned him. The last thing the cop said before he left was "if we find that car torn up, I'm coming back here to take you to jail." But, what if my son is innocent? Aren't citizens innocent until proven guilty?
Our family came together Monday morning and demanded a meeting with the Cheif of the investigators. We outlined the abuses and insisted this troll be taken off the case. They agreed. Thirty minutes after we left, the "new investigator" called my mom's cell phone with a new rumor. I then drove to my son's house and gave them all a lesson on dealing with the police. I started with "don't talk to them anymore," told them not to let them in the house without a warrent, and finished up with "what to do if you're arrested." What kind of radical am I? I'm a law-abiding, Christian, Conservative, Republican who is fed up with this police state and will now seek out others who are "fed up." I don't care what else they believe; my enemy's enemy is my friend and I will lay aside some fairly important differences to fight this fight honorably.
