01.11.2006 - Nearly a hundred people who were illegally strip-searched on arrival at the Hampshire County jail could receive at least $1,500 each in compensation. Those eligible were strip-searched at the jail after being arrested between January 18 and November seven, 2002 for crimes that did not involve drugs, weapons or violent felonies. The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that the payments will settle a class-action lawsuit brought by a Worthington lawyer, Charles Ryan the Fourth. A federal judge has given preliminary approval, and a final nod will likely be in June. The lawsuit was filed against the Hampshire Sheriff Robert Garvey and the jail's Deputy Superintendent Patrick Callihane. Strip-searches ended when the Hampshire County lockup, which only holds people who were arrested and not yet arraigned, was opened in November 2002. Before that, those who were arrested were held with the rest of the jail population. www.wcsh6.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=49564
