Deputy Jonathan Lambert

September 23, 2006 - CLOVERLAND — A 14-hour standoff between police and a Clay County sheriff's deputy near the Clay-Vigo county line ended peacefully early Saturday after hours of negotiations, police said.

The standoff began Friday at about 10:30 a.m. when Indiana State Police and Clay County Sheriff's Department officials went to the home of Clay County Deputy Jonathan Lambert, 34, of Brazil, to serve a felony arrest warrant. Authorities have not disclosed the contents of the warrant, and all court documents connected to the case have been sealed.

Authorities said Lambert refused to exit his home about five miles west of Brazil along U.S. 40 in western Indiana. Police set up a perimeter around the residence and called the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team.

Lambert came out of his home at about 2:15 p.m. carrying a long gun. He fired a round into the ground and then went back inside, state police said. About 20 minutes later, he came out again and fired a round from a handgun. No shots were fired toward officers and no one was injured.

Negotiators were in contact with Lambert throughout the day. At about 12:20 a.m., after again talking to negotiators, Lambert walked out the back door and was arrested without incident, state police said.

Lambert is being held on bond at the Parke County Jail, where he faces unspecified criminal charges.

During the standoff at least 50 officers were called to help, with some posted at intersections to keep motorists away. U.S. 40 was closed for hours, with traffic diverted to detours.

Students at Staunton Elementary and North Clay Middle schools were not allowed to ride the bus home Friday. They were kept at school until their parents could pick them up, said Chris McVay, a Clay Community Schools transportation department employee.

September 26, 2006 - BRAZIL, Ind. - A Clay County sheriff's deputy has been charged with three felony counts following a 14-hour standoff at his home with police.

Thirty-four-year-old Jonathan Lambert faces charges of criminal confinement, intimidation and sexual battery. Each charge carries a possible sentence of six months to three years in prison.

Lambert is also charged with domestic battery and criminal recklessness, both misdemeanors.

He's in the Parke County Jail in Rockville on a 25-thousand-dollar cash bond.

Authorities have not disclosed the contents of the arrest warrant that had been issued for Lambert before the standoff at his home in the town of Cloverland, and all court documents connected to the case have been sealed.

Lambert's attorney, Joseph Etling of Terre Haute, says he doesn't believe Lambert was in violation of the law.

11.30.2006 -

A Clay County sheriff's deputy who was arrested after a 14-hour standoff with police at his home has resigned from the department.

Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton says the department received Jon Lambert's resignation Monday.

Lambert was arrested in September at his Cloverland home, about ten miles east of Terre Haute. Police went to his home to arrest him on charges that he threatened to kill his girlfriend and allegedly choked her.

Lambert is being held at the Parke County jail on $50,000 cash bond.
